Battery life

I'm getting about 4 hours of battery life with the phone mostly idle. Based on a little research it seems this is due to the app pinging the network for activity. Is there anything I can do to improve this (besides a bigger battery)? Is FreedomPop still working on improving battery life?

Yes, we will be releasing an update to our messaging app which will greatly reduce battery drain and increase battery life for our FreedomPhones. The update should be released in the next week or two.

Cool, I will just uninstall the messaging app for now and wait for the new one... My battery life is 100%-27% over night just sitting on the night stand Unused with wifi, 4g, gps and bluetooth all turned off.

Hmmm...my Epic Touch lasts me all day. Not sure how many hours exactly, but I'll test that tomorrow. Are you sure you have a good battery? You don't have Facebook on your phone do you? Also I turn off all auto-updating on apps and widgets. I just refresh email and weather when I look at them.

Oh, also on the Epic Touch there is a battery monitor built into the system. Go to settings > Battery

It will show you what is using the most battery. Mine is 88% display ATM and I keep my display on low. (Shut off display is set at 5 minutes, but can be set lower)

Has the update been released yet? According to my battery monitor the messaging app is using 70% of the battery and lasting almost 4 hours. I understand it is beta. One stat I saw it woke the device around 2000 times. Not sure how accurate that is.

Have you looked at our thread on battery saving ideas? Also, I just shut my phone off at bedtime, it avoids that battery drain.
  • @William - We have not released the updated messaging app yet, we will be soon.

Thanks Taylor! I only got the phone a week ago, wasn't sure if the issue was addressed yet. Hopefully the update fixes the issue.

miguel, I did search the forum for battery issues. With the messaging app being the primary culprit according to my battery stats, I doubt anything else could make a big impact. I did lower the brightness and limited the CPU. I don't think syncing is an issue for me. I wonder if there is a program that can start that messaging app for a certain amount of time then disable it. That way you can still get messages. There is a microsoft scripting program that I might try out. It is called something like onyx.

I use a car charger on my way to work. The battery ends up dying before lunch. During lunch I put in my second battery. That barely lasts before going back on the car charger on my way home from work. It is frustrating, but I understand it is beta.

I have a BYOD. Couldn't wait at least 2 weeks to have it lol. Thanks for the offer though Taylor. I should have been clearer from the start I had a BYOD sorry about that.

On Friday I didn't have the FP APP running while at work and the battery life lasted almost twice as long, almost 8 hours. Closer to the 8.7 hours Samsung states. Next I am going to test if location makes any battery difference.

Replacing the battery might help. My wife has a Samsung smartphone (though not an S2), and the amount of charge its battery can hold starts to drop off significantly after about six months or so. After a year, the battery is effectively done. The battery that came with the BYOD phone I'm trying to use with FP is probably around two years old and will only last for 6-7 hours between charges. The replacement I bought ($10 on Ebay) runs for around 24.
