My Number Port

Stephen ChipchaseStephen Chipchase Posts: 58FreedomPop Newbie ✭✭
Now that number porting in is available in the UK I have took the plunge and started the porting in process of one of my Giffgaff numbers to FreedomPop

I'm going to use this thread to document the process for anyone who is interested in how it works, how long it takes and what if any problems I face with the port.

Initially when I started the porting process at 12.45am on Wednesday morning (27-4-16 or 4-27-16 for our friends across the pond) it said the cost was £9.99 however when checking the next morning the fee changed to free!

Obtaining my PAC from Giffgaff was pretty straight forward, I logged into my GG account and found the link for porting out, my PAC code was made available instantly, the same could be said on the FreedomPop side, I logged into my FP web account, visited the phone number section where I could choose transfer an existing number.

On this page I entered the mobile number I wanted to transfer and the PAC code given by GG and I was greeted by another page saying it may take "several days" to complete

Apparently I am going to receive an email telling me to logout of the app and back in again to activate the ported in number and texts might not work for 72 hours after the port is complete

As soon as I get an update from FreedomPop I'll post back here to keep everyone in the loop and with a bit of luck provide a rough timescale from start to finish for the port in process so others at least have a guide timeline to go off other than the several days FreedomPop quote (although I must point out that porting in from other networks might be faster or slower than Giffgaff/O2/Telefonica)
My comments and thoughts are my own opinion.

I think I need it but I suppose someone needed to go first =)

It's been three days now and the number is still active with Giffgaff and is still showing as pending on the FreedomPop end, it took 4 days to port the number into Giffgaff from Voda so I'll check it out tomorrow and if anything changes I'll post here

I've already looked into porting out and it's as simple as calling customer service for a PAC code to leave FreedomPop

    Just to update this thread

I got a service message telling me the port was completed on Tuesday afternoon.
    <img src="http://i.imgur.com/j6jwh3h.jpg" alt="" />

Outgoing calls worked from the outset but incoming calls failed at first, even logging out and back into the app never fixed it so I left it and it sorted itself out after about an hour or two

Two way texts worked from the start which I found odd, I was expecting a delay with them but never had a problem

All in all for just under a week it went pretty painless

Ive just ported from Vodafone, took 5 days over the bank holiday also.
I'm having many problems receiving calls, everyone tells me calls are ringing out and I don't even get them through!! Yes ive cheked volume etc.
Also, I'm using an iPhone and it will not allow me to use imessage or facetime with my number, those apps tell me its still awaiting activation. Ive followed all the advice about siging out and back in sync network, reboot delete and reload apps etc to no avail, the thing is driving me nuts!!! I can see myself giving up and returning to Vodafone.
Any help in resolving this would be much appreciated.

Calls and texts come through eventually for me but removing the SIM, uninstalling the app, reinserting the SIm and reinstalling the app should get the SIM, the app and your account in sync.

If that doesn't work, can you try on mobile data only then WIFI only to see if it's still the same, sometimes on WIFI the router drops SIP/VoIP packets when they try and enter your network and on some routers you need to forward ports 5060 and 5061 and a few UDP ports if you have sound issues (if the router is dropping SIP packets on entry your phone won't ring)

I've been reading up and as far as I can tell it's a no go, iMessage and Facetime won't activate with your FreedomPop number, it's something to do with the way Apple activate them, I think they send a hidden service message back to Apple with your number and/or device info to confirm activation, as the SIM is data only, it can't send SMS it can't send the service message to activate.
You can still use iMessage and Facetime but not with your phone number, you can use your AppleID or another email address.

I am with 3 (Three) and wondering if I will be able to port my number to FreedomPop (FP) as they use 3 (Three) as well. I can't find any information about it on FreedomPop website.

My guess is no but hopefully someone can confirm.

Also, if by any chance I can keep my old number, do I port this after activating my FP sim?

    Thanks.

You should be ok porting from Three.

You'll need to order the SIM and pick a temporary FreedomPop number, as soon as the SIM arrives, you've made a call from the temporary number to make sure it works and you've requested your PAC from Three you can start the porting process.

Does the iMessage and FaceTime issue affect everyone. What about other messaging apps like Whatsapp?
  • Stephen ChipchaseStephen Chipchase Posts: 58FreedomPop Newbie ✭✭
I've recently added a cheap Android handset to my collection and Whatsapp worked on there with my FreedomPop number.

I don't use it on the iPhone but I've been told if it doesn't work you can contact Whatsapp customer support and ask them to whitelist your FreedomPop number.
You might have to explain it is a genuine UK number used on a VOIP/SIP service and let them know how FreedomPop works with the app and data only SIM but they should whitelist it and you should be able to activate it.

    Here's a thought..........

Has anyone contacted Apple to explain how FreedomPop works in the UK with the data only SIM and the UK mobile number on the SIP app? I wonder if they'd whitelist a UK FreedomPop number for iMessage/Facetime?

I might have to contact them to find out =)

I've just looked at porting my number to FreedomPop but it just says coming soon.
Do you all know something I dont?

They're running an upgrade on the backend to speed up / streamline the porting process and it should be back up and running any day now.

12th June tried to port my number. Says "coming Soon". 1st July 2016 STILL "Coming Soon" Just how long is it going to take FP to upgrade the backend?

I suspect FreedomPop are waiting on their UK supplier, if so all they can do is keep pushing the supplier and wait.

Keep checking back it will eventually change from coming soon to active.

As soon as it's ready they'll let us have it

i think jimbo means you can't even request a port at the moment as they took the option offthe website a few weeks ago. indirectly I'm being told they're working on it. would be good if they could actually give a target date so we know whether to give up waiting or not. i'm in the same boat.
