Can't install app on reset phone

I had Freedompop working on my elderly "Ice Phone mini", but the phone was getting overloaded with all the apps installed. So I reset it it so I could give it to my wife in clean condition, but now whenever I try to install the Freedompop messaging app, I get a message saying "Install failed". No reason given, just install failed.
I've tried installing from the Google Play store, and also sideloading apk files (various versions) of the Freedompop app. But the install still fails. I've installed other apps, such as BBC iplayer radio and others, without any problem.
What to do?

    Hello Alexandra

    The phone runs android 4.2.2
There is plenty of space on the phone - I've just reset it.

Freedompop worked on the phone before. Now the file downloads and then says "install failed".

Can you post a link to the apk file rather than to the play store
    Thanks
