Does the data used when sending texts & makings calls deduct from my data allotment?
No, this data is drawn from an entirely separate pool.

I saw this on a Slick Deals post, but I haven't found that to be the case; it certainly appears to use my data to make calls. Can someone from FreedomPop explain how this should work, if that's wrong, or if I did something wrong? (Just make a call from the Freedompop Messaging app?) Thanks.


Edit: So I tried it again, and it did seem to work this time, not taking from my data. I'm not sure what I did differently, anyone know how this works?

    You answered your own question. But when you start a new service there are always updates from both droid and phone carrier. If you use a home or public Wi-Fi, there shouldn't be data deduction.
