Defective Phone

I have go a Galaxy S3 from freedompop and was defective since I got it as there was no voice when I was using my headphones but I was continuing as is. Now the phone has stopped charging.
I called up Customer Support yesterday and they said I will get an email or a call on the next steps. Today I got an email to ship the device, I have couple of questions:

1) Do I need to pay the shipping charges? Isn't it ridiculous that when my phone is still under warranty I have to pay the charges.
2) For almost 2 weeks, I will be out of service. Usually others provide the replacement first before asking you to ship the defective device.

Can any of the admin help here with these issues?
